Natural gas is one of the cleanest, safest, and most useful forms of energy in our day-to-day lives.
Natural gas can be found by itself or in association with oil. It is both colourless and odourless and is in fact a mixture of hydrocarbons. While mainly methane, the other hydrocarbons include ethane, propane, and butane. Water, oil, sulphur, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and other impurities may be mixed with the gas when it comes out of the ground. These impurities are removed before the natural gas is delivered to our homes and businesses.
In City Gas Distribution system, Natural Gas is supplied mainly in two forms:
Piped Natural Gas (PNG)
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Piped Natural Gas (PNG): Natural Gas termed as PNG when it is supplied through an integrated network of Steel and PE (Poly ethylene) pipeline to end consumers like Residential, Industrial and Commercial customers. PNG has several distinctions to its credit – of being a pollution-free, safe, economical and user friendly fuel. PNG has no hassles of cylinder booking, waiting delivery and storage space requirement. PNG is being used predominantly as a versatile fuel in many major cities catering to domestic, commercial and industrial applications. In domestic sector PNG is used for cooking, water heating, space heating, air conditioning, etc. In commercial sector, PNG is used for cooking, water/ space heating, central air conditioning, power generation etc. In industries, PNG is used for power generation, central air-conditioning, fertilizers, petrochemicals, steam production, gas processing etc.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Natural Gas compressed at a pressure of 200 – 250 Bar as an automotive fuel is termed as CNG. CNG is substantially economical and Eco-friendly than the conventional liquid auto fuels. The use of CNG significantly reduces harmful vehicular exhaust gas emissions like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other suspended particles.
